Xàtiva lived a period of cultural splendour during the Muslim domination. The old town was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1982. After the christian conquest, it was the second city of the Kingdom of Valencia and the birthplace of renowned personalities: the Borja family.
Its fire ordered by Felipe V, the first Bourbon to be enthroned in Spain, has been engraved in the city and in the memory of the xativins, known since then by the nickname of socarrats.
