Spanish legislation obliges financial institutions to identify customers reliably. The documents vary depending on the place of residence.

Residents

EU citizens must provide:

1) passport and NIE (foreigner's identity number);

2) identity card of their country and NIE);

3) TIE (foreigner's identity card).

Citizens from non-EU countries must in any case present the TIE.

Non-residents

Foreigners must present their passport or identity card from their country plus the negative certificate of residence issued by the Ministry of the Interior or the DRF3.

For legal residents in the EU even without a fixed address, there are bank accounts for basic transactions (deposits, cash withdrawals, transfers, and online access) and with payment transactions in the EU (direct debit, debit card payments and transfers).
