Gandia was an important cultural and commercial centre during the 15th and 16th centuries. It was home to several important poets including Ausiàs March, the novelist Joanot Martorell was born there as well, but it is perhaps best known for the Borja or Borgia, through their family title, Duke of Gandia. From Aragonese origin, the family settled down in Gandia after the conquest of Valencia by the king Jaime I.
